Exercise helps support colorectal cancer prevention and overall health.
By Gabrielle Carden, PA-C
Colorectal cancer is no longer a condition seen only in older adults. Recent data show a sharp rise in cases among younger people, making timely screening more important than ever. According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is now the leading cause of cancer-related death in Americans under 50.
When to Start Screening
· Begin routine colon cancer screening at age 45.
· Start earlier if there is a family history of colorectal cancer, other risk factors, or signs/symptoms.
Best Screening Options
· Colonoscopy: The gold standard for detection and removing precancerous polyps (colon masses). Cancer Sensitivity: >95%
· Cologuard: Appropriate only for people without a family history of colorectal cancer and without red-flag symptoms (rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, constipation stool changes, etc). Cancer Sensitivity: 92-94%
What the Latest Data Tell Us
· It is the third most common cancer among both men and women.
· 75% of people diagnosed have no family history, underscoring the importance of universal screening.
These trends reinforce a critical message: no one is truly “low risk.” Early detection significantly improves outcomes. Let’s encourage our patients to complete their screenings and help them understand why it matters. It can make a life-saving difference!
