August 17, 2023July is UV (Ultraviolet) awareness month. The sun’s harmful rays are widely known to cause skin damage, but they can also be detrimental to the eyes and surrounding areas.
What is UV Radiation?
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a form of non-ionizing radiation that is emitted by the sun and artificial sources, such as tanning beds. Although the sun has benefits for people, including the creation of Vitamin D, it also causes health risks. (CDC)
Follow these tips below to ensure you and your family stay safe in the sun’s rays:
Use broad-spectrum sunscreen
Use sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 30 and reapply frequently. Sun screen shields the skin from harmful UV rays ultimately reducing the risk of skin cancer from the rays.
Wear Sunglasses
1 in 4 Americans rarely or never wear sunglasses. Sunglasses work as one of the best defenses for your eyes. To get the most protection, ensure your glasses block 100% of sunrays.
Wear a Hat
Hats can block up to 50% of the sun’s rays
Wear Protective Clothing
Light and breezy shirts provide the best protection. Also seek shade to avoid the sun’s harmful UV rays
