September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. There are several factors that can contribute to this disease such as genetics, eating patterns, and physical activity levels. It has become a critical global issue. In fact, according to the CDC, 1 in 5 American children has obesity. Children who suffer from obesity are at higher risk for health issues such as asthma, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension.
There are many ways to prevent Childhood Obesity. An increase in physical activities coupled with a healthier diet can decrease the risk of childhood obesity. Overexposure to TVs, computers, tablets, and other electronic devices can easily become a sedentary habit. It is important to limit screen time and encourage more physical activity. Easy access to cheap, processed foods high in sugars and fats has led to poor nutritional intake. A well-balanced diet will ensure an overall healthier body.
How can we promote healthier living? This calls for a comprehensive approach, engaging the child, family, school, and broader community. As we mark Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, let’s take this opportunity to not only spread awareness but also use it as a springboard to effect positive change. After all, it takes a village to ensure our children lead healthier, happier lives.
