CRCHC Opens Local Food Pantry in Concord to Support Families
November 11, 2025Every November, we recognize Diabetes Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about prevention, early detection, and management of diabetes. At Cabarrus Rowan Community Health Centers (CRCHC), we are committed to helping patients and families across Cabarrus, Rowan, and Mecklenburg Counties take control of their health and live well with or without diabetes.
Understanding Diabetes
Diabetes is a long-term condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. When the body does not make enough insulin or cannot use it properly, sugar builds up in the bloodstream, leading to serious health complications if left unmanaged.
There are several main types of diabetes:
-
Type 1 Diabetes: Although it often appears during childhood or adolescence, Type 1 diabetes can also develop in adults. In this condition, the pancreas makes little or no insulin.
-
Type 2 Diabetes: This occurs when the body cannot use insulin correctly, causing sugar to build up in the blood. It is the most common type of diabetes.
-
Gestational Diabetes: This form develops during pregnancy when the body cannot effectively use insulin. It causes high blood sugar that can impact both the pregnancy and the baby’s health.
Common Signs and Symptoms
You may not always recognize the symptoms of diabetes early on. Some common warning signs include:
-
Increased thirst or frequent urination
-
Fatigue or unexplained weight loss
-
Blurred vision
-
Slow-healing cuts or wounds
If you notice these symptoms, it is important to schedule a screening.
Managing and Preventing Diabetes
Diabetes can be managed, and in some cases prevented, with healthy lifestyle habits and regular medical care.
Here are a few ways to take control:
-
Eat balanced meals with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
-
Stay active for at least 30 minutes most days.
-
Monitor your blood sugar as directed.
-
Keep regular appointments with your primary care provider.
At CRCHC, our integrated care team, including primary care, dental, and behavioral health providers works together to support your overall well-being. We offer diabetes education, nutrition counseling, lab testing, and affordable care options for all patients.
