Early detection is one of the most powerful tools in the fight against breast cancer. A mammogram is a safe, low-dose X-ray that can find changes in breast tissue long before symptoms appear.
At McGill Family Medicine, women in Concord, NC can now access affordable, high-quality mammograms close to home. Whether you have insurance or not, CRCHC offers sliding scale fees based on income, ensuring every woman can prioritize her health without financial worry.
What to Expect During Your Mammogram
Getting a mammogram can feel intimidating if you’ve never had one before, but the process is simple and quick.
The entire procedure takes about 20 minutes. Each breast is gently compressed between two plastic plates for a few seconds while an X-ray is taken. The breast is then repositioned for another image, and the process is repeated on the other side.
Compression can feel uncomfortable but is necessary to get a clearer, more accurate image.
You should receive your results within 10 days. If you haven’t heard back, you’re encouraged to call and ask for an update.
If doctors find something that looks unusual, you may be contacted within a week for additional images or tests. This does not necessarily mean cancer. Many times, it’s due to dense breast tissue, a cyst, or simply an image that wasn’t clear enough.
If it’s your first mammogram, your doctor might take a closer look at certain areas simply because there’s no previous scan for comparison.
According to the CDC, regular mammograms are one of the most effective ways to detect breast cancer early when it’s easiest to treat. The American Cancer Society recommends that women begin annual mammograms at age 40, or earlier if they are at higher risk.
What (and What Not) to Wear
To make your appointment easier, follow these simple tips:
-
Wear a two-piece outfit so you’ll only need to remove your top and bra.
-
Avoid using deodorant, antiperspirant, powder, lotion, or ointment on or around your chest on the day of your mammogram. These products can show up as white spots on your X-ray, making it harder to read the images accurately.
